Class Experience

>>>PLEASE READ BEFORE ENROLLING: The live portion of this class is a 45-minute-long, lecture-based multimedia presentation, with Q&A at the end -- you know your learner(s) best, so please consider if the session length and format is a good fit for them.<<<

This class will introduce students to the natural history of the Flamingo family and each of the six living species, including overviews of taxonomy and evolutionary history, biogeography, biology and behavior, and conservation. We will also take a brief look at how flamingos are represented in both traditional and pop culture. And yes, we will definitely talk about why they are (usually) pink! ;)

These 1/2 hour live informational sessions will consist of primarily of multimedia content (video clips, images and GIFs, infographics, etc.) accompanied by lecture, and will be followed by additional free resources posted to the Classroom board so that you can continue to learn more about these amazing animals!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in History from Lindenwood University
Master's Degree in Science from American Public University
I am a naturalist with a focus on zoology, and enjoy sharing my love of the animal kingdom with lifelong learners of all ages through various education and outreach activities both online and off. I especially enjoy connecting children to nature, and keeping their natural scientific sparks lit!

I have specialized experience in ornithology and birding. I am a Flying WILD certified educator, have a certificate in bird biology from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology as well as written species accounts for their Neotropical Birds Online website, and completed the Certified Bird Feeding Specialist program through Wild Birds Unlimited. I also focused on birds for my graduate research project (West Nile Virus in corvids), and help monitor birds at my local nature center as part of their eBird Project Feederwatch program.

I also have nearly two decades experience as a home education advocate, including homeschooling my own children from preschool through high school. I am a big proponent of flexible learning, individualized education, and supporting fellow neurodiverse learners, so please don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or requests for additional resources. We all learn in our own way and time, but everyone should have the chance to learn about how cool animals are!
