Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
In this class we will use games, a video and an interactive app to explore the names of each African country, a bit of history surrounding Africa's different regions, and its location with relation to the other major continents. Learners will be exposed to maps and learn about directions, while they will also learn to spell and pronounce the names of many new countries, as well as a learn some historical figures from the continent. The class will provide a lot of interaction throughout the process of learning. No previous knowledge is required.

Day 1: Directions and Continents
Day 2: The Africa Game and Names
Day 3: Regions
Day 4: More on the Regions

Sharpening learners' geography skills in a lesser known area will allow them to stand out, which is also an added benefit. But its kind of like virtual travel and a field trip, using the map as our guide :)
Learning Goals
Students will learn the four directions, the world's main continents, and the regions and countries in Africa. At the end of class, each student will walk away with a few new countries from the continent that they can say and spell the names of.

Supply List
There are 2 handouts to accompany the class, and a third optional one (Regions handout). You can either print out the ones you would like, or let me know if you will need an electronic alternative. Students will also need pen/pencil to write, and for students who will be printing out the materials, they will also need colouring tools (crayons, pencil crayons or markers) and a small item (about the size of a coin) that they can use as a 'game board chip'. You can bring materials to write notes on, however, there will not be a lot of notes.

One website is provided for students who won't have access to printed materials and are needing an electronic alternative.
