This will be a hands on course where children can play with play-dough and learn the first few letters of their ABCs. We will work on fine motor skills as they roll out the play-dough to form the letters. We will talk about the letter name and sound. We will begin with the first few letters of the alphabet. I go into more detail and in letter in full in my multi day class. This is only an intro. Other topics of discussion will be what words start with that letter. I will call on each child through the class to make sure everyone has a chance to talk, share and participate. I will model for the learners and assist them in completing their letters correctly. WHY PLAY DOUGH?? Playing with play dough helps develop cognitive skills, social and emotional skills and even language and communication skills. Play dough also develops fine motor skills. The acts of squishing, rolling, flattening, etc.. help children develop muscles used in their hands for fine motor movements useful in the future, such as holding a pencil or using scissors. So even though they think they are playing and having fun.. they are learning and preparing for the future!! **No experience required.**

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi I’m Jennifer Burgard! I am a mother of 3; ages 20, 5 and 3 years old. I'm from Washington State. I'm so excited to meet all of you and welcome you to my classroom. I am a Certified Elementary Education teacher with a current and valid teaching certificate. I was a Special Education /Life Skills teacher for grades pre-k to 6th grade for 10 years. This included reading, writing, math, communication, social/emotional, daily life skills, etc. I have a BAE in Elementary Education with a Major in Reading and a Masters Degree in Special Education. I am very experienced with modifying and accommodating skills and curriculum to meet the students’ needs. I am also very good at motivating students to learn and getting them engaged. 1-1 and small group learning is my specialty.
I left the classroom in June 2019 and I now stay home and teach online and be MOM.
I have found I love being home with my children and being their very first teacher from a very young age as we learn through exploration and play. I believe children learn when they are having fun and are engaged. I do a lot with hands on toys, music, movement, play, etc. After being a special education teacher for 10 years I have found many creative ways to adapt learning to fit the learner and get them motivated.
I also enjoy hobbies such as crochet, scrapbooking, card making, etc. for over 18 years. I’m a teacher at heart and love to teach others to do what I love!
I can't wait to teach and have fun with your lovely learners; big or small!
