Leap Into the Art of Black History

Learners are invited to join me as we celebrate artists who are part of the African Diaspora. This years BHM theme is African Americans in the arts, and we will celebrate this in this class with a virtual museum and end with a drum circle.

Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner - Intermediate Level
The theme for Black History Month in 2024 is African Americans in the Arts! This class will give us an opportunity to celebrate people in the African Diaspora who are artists. We will make a virtual living museum out of pictures that your children create before the class.

Prior to class, students will make either a self portrait or a portrait of a black person in the arts using a style inspired by a black artist. Then when they attend class, a few students will be invited to share about the person pictured and/or the person whose style they were inspired by.

Families are encouraged to spend some out of class time, before the class to create their masterpieces. I have created a pinterest board with some artists and styles that the learner can use if needed. You will find that in the Sources section.

Class Outline:
Introductions
Brief discussion about why the arts are important
Share time for art projects
Closing drum circle

Students are also welcome to work on their projects during class. However they may not have time to share due to time constraints.

My previous BHM and Diversity Outschool classes were well attended with high reviews. You can look at my Outschool profile for reviews of my previous classes.

I currently teach in person at a private school serving children in PS - 8th grade, where I created a BHM program to teach all age groups. I also lead drum circles for my school.

In addition to that I am a theater teacher and I have directed plays and performances at my school. The arts are a big part of my life!
