Leaf Chromatography: Why Do Leaves Change Color?

Students will observe a demonstration of leaf chromatography, where the pigments of a leaf will be pulled out and shown on a paper. They will learn that despite the leaf being green, it also contains hidden colors in it called pigments. We will discuss the leaf's main pigment chlorophyll and the role of pigments in photosynthesis. The teacher will demonstrate the concept and then students will read a brief article on pigments. Students will learn about leaf pigments including chlorophyll and its role in photosynthesis. The will also learn about how plants change colors in the fall.
