How does the law apply to the air around us? Ownership of air seems like strange thing to talk about - but if you don't own the air above your land, how can you build on the land? We will explore the idea of how much of the air you own over your land (it used to be you owned the air above your land to the center of the universe - would that work today?), and how that ownership affects how you deal with your neighbors. We will then cover laws governing flying airplanes - from local to national to international laws. Why can the TSA search you without any type of probable cause (that's a little 4th Amendment law thrown in as well!)? What requirements are there to be a pilot? Where can airplanes fly internationally, and where can't they fly? And what about those drones? Shouldn't there be rules for those things? Or can they just fly anywhere they want whenever they want? (The answer is no, they can't - but why?) Finally, we will cover space because space is cool, but it's a whole new frontier. How do we negotiate the ownership/use of space with other countries - especially when not all countries can even access space like Russia, the United States, or China? This is going to be a fun class! I look forward to seeing you there!
Learning Goals
- Students will begin to understand that laws apply even to the air around us and the space we see at night.
- Students will begin to understand how international laws work as countries have to work together to create rules for us to follow.
