Law of the Land, the US Supreme Court: Understanding Our Rights in Today's World
Class experience
Do students have a right to protest in schools? Is it legal for Americans to burn the American flag? Can the United States government take away your rights? All of these have been questions brought before the US Supreme Court and their answers still affect us today. In this class we will discuss a different Supreme Court case each week for 12 weeks. This class is taught in English.
Students will improve their understanding of the US Justice System as well as how our rights are interpreted and protected. They will also think critically about how and why the Supreme Court made the decisions they did. Students will be able to hear opposing sides of an argument and determine what opinion they agree with and why.
I have been a public school teacher for 7 years and for those 7 years I have taught about the cases that came before the US Supreme Court, how the court ruled, what the opinions were, and how those decisions are still felt in our society today.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students will be exposed to the topics of abortion in the Roe case and teen pregnancy in the Kuhlmeier case. These topics will only be discussed in regards to the case and will not be discussed in depth or at length. There are also cases involving racism and discrimination based on religion and sexual identity. Other cases involve issues of the death penalty and LGBTQ rights. I am always open to discussing any issues or concerns you may have so please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. My classroom is a safe and inclusive space where ALL learners are valued and free to express themselves in a judgment free zone.
In some lessons we will use brief YouTube videos to reinforce concepts or to show news coverage of when decisions were announced. All videos have been previewed.
