Discover the woman behind the story! In this course, we will bring Laura Ingalls from the beloved children's book alive. We will learn all about Laura Ingalls Wilder, who she was, where she travelled, and how she came to write this series of books. We will begin in Wisconsin in 1867 and follow her family onto the prairie of Kansas, then to Minnesota, South Dakota, and on! The Ingalls family traveled to the American west to build a life for themselves in the years (and decades) following the American Civil War. This means that the perspective from which these books are written must be viewed both through the context of the times and from the perspective of today. For this reason, multiple viewpoints will be addressed if/when topics of race, indigenous populations, government intervention, or other sensitive topics arise. We will explore multiple viewpoints to encourage equity in thought and unbiased dialogue. We will read parts of her main book, Little House on the Prairie, and discuss the other books in the series. I will also introduce your student to the series of books that follow her mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and daughter. This class is a biographical experience for one of the greatest children's authors of America. I have loved this series since I was a child, and I am excited to share these stories with your child!
