Class Experience

Lattice Multiplication
Together we will look at a less traditional way of multiplying multi-digit numbers. Some learners understand this visual concept of multiplying much easier than the traditional method.
Multiplication without a calculator with long strings of numbers can seem overwhelming. Multiplying with more than three digits can be tiresome, complex, and error-prone. A simple and effective way to do complex multiplication is lattice multiplication (some call it the box method), which breaks up the digits being multiplied into tables and columns. With graph paper, colored pencils and multiplication table, multiplying large numbers will be exciting!
The teacher will show the students the method, practice together and then work a bit on their own. Work can be shared with the teacher. We will structure the practice time based on individual ability levels. It's okay if basic multiplication facts aren't memorized! Just bring a long a multiplication chart!
I do, we do, you do!
