A one-off session to explore the language and culture of Ancient Rome, from geography to word derivation. Students will get a chance to ask questions and find the most suitable way to continue learning about the Romans

This will be an introduction to what the study of Latin and the Romans entails. We will learn to count in Latin and learn about the history of Latin words that can be found in English. After learning how to write our names in Roman cursive, we will also look at some art and literature from ancient Rome, and have a sneak peek at life in a busy Roman city. Finally, we will learn the names of the Roman gods. Students will have a chance to ask any questions they have about studying the world of the Romans, and the atmosphere will be relaxed and encouraging for students to want to find out more about the fascinating world of Antiquity. Please do send questions in advance if there is an aspect of ancient Roman culture that you would like me to cover. ESL learners are welcome. Students should have pen and paper with them for a surprise game at the end of the lesson.
Learning Goals
Students will have an overview of the numbers in Latin and their presence in English, the geography of the Roman empire, Roman society, and some major works of art and literature as well as cursive script. They will have the tools to decide if they want to continue learning Latin.

Parental Guidance
The standards of behaviour and religion are those corresponding to the historical period, and as such there will be mention of gladiatorial fights and the different beliefs they held about rights and duties of citizens.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
