Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
Beginner Level
In this highly interactive, five-week class that continues from the prerequisite classes Intro to Latin for Kids, Latin Level 1, Latin Level 2, and Latin Level 3, learners will continue to speak the ancient language of Latin using classical pronunciation. Through lively discussions, vocabulary lists or flashcards (which I will provide), visuals, optional note taking, and imitating my speaking, students will generate and translate increasingly advanced Latin sentences—some of them funny. Also, because about 60% of English has Latin in it, the kids will see how the roots from Latin words in class connect with many English words they already know, plus they will increase their English vocabularies. There will even be the opportunity to invent wacky English words with Latin roots!

The material will include nouns, verbs in two tenses, a new irregular verb or two, adjectives, four noun cases, more than two noun declensions, prepositional phrases, new vocabulary, and a few high-frequency words. Each week, the learners will have ongoing opportunities to construct increasingly advanced Latin sentences using what they have learned!

Because this class builds onto the prerequisite classes mentioned above, learners are required to complete them prior to starting this five-week class. If your child(ren) has/have previous Latin experience that might satisfy the equivalent material in this series of Latin classes up to this point, I can consider exceptions on an individual basis. Please keep in mind that because Latin learning outside of my classes does not parallel my scope and sequence, it is difficult to ascertain where a student would fit into my class sequence. In addition, for students who have already mastered what I introduce in this class, the class likely would not be an appropriate fit.

I will provide each learner printable material consisting of vocabulary and/or flashcards. Along with speaking and writing in fun sentences, more specifically (depending on overall learner readiness):

Class 1: Students will review, strengthen, and practice using 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th conjugation regular verbs in the present tense.

Class 2: Students will review, strengthen, and practice using the possessive (genitive) case. They will also learn additional prepositions and, depending on overall learner readiness, discover when to use the (prepositional) ablative case and the (direct object) accusative case.

Week 3: Students will look at nouns beyond the 1st and 2nd declensions and the spellings of four cases. They will begin using the 4 cases with those declensions.

Week 4: Students will receive a detailed introduction to a past (the imperfect) tense and begin using it.

Week 5: Students will add an irregular verb or two to their Latin repertoires.

I look forward to seeing you!

I taught beginning elementary school Latin as part of my teaching career. I also created and taught a private extracurricular program in Latin and Latin roots for elementary school-ages students. I enjoy instilling self-confidence and motivation in students to learn unfamiliar material in ways that are relevant to their familiar, everyday lives. This involves a combination of discovery, discussion, and practice, with an age-appropriate sense of humor. Establishing a low-risk atmosphere and a comfortable rapport, I enjoy connecting with each individual learner, valuing the unique interests, strengths, and eager curiosity the students bring to class.
