Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Beginner Level
In this highly interactive, five-week class that continues from the five-week class Latin Level 1 for Kids, the students will continue to speak and write the ancient language of Latin. Through lively discussions, vocabulary lists or flashcards (which I will provide), visuals, optional note taking, and imitating my speaking, students will solidify classical Latin pronunciation and generate simple sentences—some of them funny. Because 60% of English has Latin in it, the kids will learn Latin word roots that can increase their English vocabularies. There will even be the opportunity to invent wacky English words with Latin roots!

Students will use the present tense of the irregular verb esse (to be) in a variety of situations, and they will extend their use of "1st conjugation" regular verbs. When ready, they will begin to learn how to conjugate and use "2nd conjugation, 3rd conjugation, and 4th conjugation" regular verbs. Plus, they will build onto their vocabulary of nouns and their genders, using both the subject (Nominative) case and the direct object (Accusative) case. Depending on learner readiness, I plan to provide a basic exposure or introduction to noun declensions and an awareness of additional noun cases. Plus, students will learn and use some high frequency Latin words.

Because this class builds onto the five-week "Latin Level 1 for Kids," students are required to complete that class before enrolling in this five-week class. If your student(s) has (have) previously mastered the equivalent in learning, I would be happy to discuss with you whether the prerequisite class is necessary. If no section of "Latin Level 1 for Kids " is available for your student(s), please send me a day/time request to schedule a new section for that class.

I will provide each learner printable material consisting of vocabulary and/or flashcards.

I look forward to seeing you!

I taught beginning elementary school Latin as part of my teaching career. I also created and taught a private extracurricular program in Latin and Latin roots for elementary school-ages students. I enjoy instilling self-confidence and motivation in students to learn unfamiliar material in ways that are relevant to their familiar, everyday lives. This involves a combination of discovery, discussion, and practice, with an age-appropriate sense of humor. Establishing a low-risk atmosphere and a comfortable rapport, I enjoy connecting with each individual learner, valuing the unique interests, strengths, and eager curiosity the students bring to class.
