Class Experience

Students taking this class will learn Classical Latin in this introductory course, using the Latin text/story book Latina Linguam Per Se Illustrata - Pars I: Familia Romana by Hans Orberg. This book is written entirely in Latin and contains illustrations to convey concepts and vocabulary in a natural progression.

In the first few chapters, the sentences are very short and simple, slowly becoming more complex as the readers knowledge of Latin grows. In this first course we will be covering the first 8 chapters of the book over the course of 10 lessons which will meet twice a week for 45 minutes.

During the course of each lesson we will be discussing the grammar in each lesson, how it functions in a Latin sentence, with a focus on both the similarities and differences to English grammar and syntax. We will also be reading from each chapter during the course of the class. As homework, students will read the remainder of each chapter not covered in class. Classes the following week will begin with reading comprehension questions, as well as to help answer the questions students may have.

This course will be broken down in the following manner over 4 weeks:

Week 1

Chapter I: IMPERIUM ROMANUM; LITTERAE ET NUMERI

Lesson 1: Reading Section I and Exercises
Lesson 2: Reading Section II and Exercises

Week 2

Chapter II: FAMILIA ROMANA; LIBER TUUS LATINUS

Lesson 3: Reading Section I and Exercises
Lesson 4: Reading Section II and Exercises

Week 3

     Chapter III: PUER IMPROBUS

Lesson 5: Reading Scene I and Exercises
Lesson 6: Reading Scene II and III and Exercises

Week 4

     Chapter IV: DOMINUS ET SERVI

Lesson 7: Reading Scene I and Exercises
Lesson 8: Reading Scene II and III and Exercises

I use a structured, but relaxed teaching style, which allows ample time for questions and in-class practice. I enjoy building a rapport with students who have a shared enthusiasm for learning languages, but especially for Latin, a language for which I have cultivated a passion going back more than fifteen years.

Students interested in this class do not need to have any prior knowledge in Latin, but my other course - Introduction to Classical Latin - Language Course - would be of great benefit, as well as a rudimentary understanding of English grammar.
Learning Goals
Students taking this class will learn the beginnings of Latin grammar and syntax, through a Latin-only textbook with explanation from the teacher. This will include an in-depth overview of Latin nouns and their declensions, Latin verbs and their conjugations, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, pronouns, etc. Students will also learn basic Latin sentence structure (i.e. syntax).
