Class Experience

Designed for absolute beginners, this course introduces the foundations of the Latin language, emphasizing comprehension and fluency from the very first lesson. I believe in immersing students in the language from the outset, enabling them to think and communicate in Latin as if it were a first language. By starting with very simple sentences, students will be excited to see that they can understand some Latin from day one.

What will be taught?
Throughout the course, students will delve into the fundamentals of Latin grammar, vocabulary, and syntax. Using the renowned textbook Familia Romana, we will focus on mastering the content of the first four chapters, laying a solid foundation for further linguistic exploration. Topics covered include noun and verb declensions, basic sentence structure, and essential vocabulary for everyday communication.

How is class structured?
Generally, the first class of each week will introduce new concepts, including grammar and vocabulary. These sessions will be fun and interactive. The second class of each week will be devoted to reading practice. Students will take turns translating from Familia Romana, our textbook. Based on how this goes, we will pause for additional instruction and practice.

How do I teach?
I employ a variety of teaching methods to cater to diverse learning styles. Though some rote memorization is unavoidable, I also use visual aids, role-playing, games, and storytelling. I also believe it is important to move slowly through a beginning Latin course so that no student feels like they are falling behind.

What's my teaching style?
My teaching style is characterized by its interactive nature and student-centered focus. I strive to create a supportive and inclusive atmosphere where every student feels empowered to participate and take ownership of their learning journey. By incorporating elements of humor and creativity into my lessons, I aim to make Latin accessible and enjoyable for all learners.

How much will learners get to interact?
Class will be interactive. Students will be expected to volunteer questions, to answer questions, to provide their translations, and to participate in role-playing activities and games.
