Beginner Level
In this highly interactive class, learners will learn how to speak using classical pronunciation and write the ancient language of Latin. This course combines Intro to Latin for Kids with Latin Level 1 for Kids (Ages 9 to 12) into a six-week class. Using stuffed animals/characters, students will generate and translate sentences—some of them funny. They will engage in lively discussions, vocabulary lists or flashcards, visuals, optional note taking, and imitation of my speaking. Because about 60% of English has Latin in it, the kids will also see how roots from Latin words in class connect with many English words they already know, plus they will increase their English vocabularies. There will even be the opportunity to invent wacky English words with Latin roots! The material will include nouns, verbs, adjectives, two noun cases, three noun declensions, and a few high-frequency words. Each week, the learners will have opportunities to construct increasingly advanced Latin sentences using what they have learned! I will provide each learner printable material consisting of vocabulary and/or flashcards. In addition to increasing Latin vocabulary and working with Latin roots in English, here are specifics on what students will do each week (depending on overall learner readiness): Week 1: Students will receive a brief overview of the historical and linguistic context of Latin and learn classical Latin pronunciation rules. We will start using use the present tense (1st and 2nd person singular) of the verb esse (to be) as well as 1st person singular forms of a few regular verbs. They also will learn some nouns using the subject (Nominative) case. The material will progress according to learner readiness and interest. Class 2: Students will learn how to conjugate "regular" Latin verbs (present tense) in the 1st conjugation category using subject pronouns and will build their repertoires of these verbs. They will then use the 3rd person Latin verb forms with nouns as they begin creating funny sentences. Class 3: After some practice, students will strengthen their mastery of regular verb conjugations by playing a class game. Class 4: Students will begin discovering prepositional phrases and use them to expand their ability to build fun sentences. Class 5: Students will learn about Latin noun genders, adjectives, and gender agreements. They will expand their use of the irregular verb "esse" (to be). Class 6: Students will reinforce and build onto the material they studied in classes 1 through 5. They will also receive an introduction on how to use the direct object (accusative case). I am looking forward to seeing you!

Self-taught in Latin, I taught beginning elementary school Latin as part of my teaching career. I also created and taught a private extracurricular program in Latin and Latin roots for elementary school-ages students. I enjoy instilling self-confidence and motivation in students to learn unfamiliar material in ways that are relevant to their familiar, everyday lives. This involves a combination of discovery, discussion, and practice, with an age-appropriate sense of humor. Establishing a low-risk atmosphere and a comfortable rapport, I enjoy connecting with each individual learner, valuing the unique interests, strengths, and eager curiosity the students bring to class.
