Latin for 19th-Century Kids (Part 1)
Class experience
Do you like history? Do you like memorizing things? Are you like Hermione - do you like to learn all your set books off by heart? Have you ever thought about what school was like at different times and places? Do you think it would be cool to learn Latin like British kids did in the 1800s? Maybe you could understand loads of spells from Harry Potter! The author of "A Child's First Latin Book," written by Theophilus Dwight Hall in 1879, says that it can be used by any reasonably intelligent...
Students will learn: * to decline first and second declension Latin nouns and adjectives, including nominative, vocative, accusative, genitive, dative, and ablative cases; * third person singular and plural present active indicative forms of the verbs love, see, and have; * about 70 vocabulary words from the first and second declension; * grammatical terms including noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, conjunction, preposition, subject, object, sentence, case; * to parse (thoroughly analyse words and sentences grammatically and identify the case, number, and gender of a noun and give its English meaning); By the end of the course, they will be able to parse first and second declension nouns and adjectives, and translate simple sentences into Latin from English and into English from Latin.
You'll need a notebook and/or lined paper, pens, markers, crayons, or colored pencils, and stuff to make flash cards with. I will supply curriculum material. During class, you'll be writing answers to questions, or making flash cards, or making charts and filling them in. You'll be doing homework exercises on paper, and bringing it to class to check your answers.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
A Child's First Latin Book, by Theophilus Dwight Hall, 1879 version. This is in the public domain, and is available free through archive.org and other sources. You don't need to get this book - I'll be providing the required material in the classroom. I will share flash card sets on Quizlet for you to practice vocabulary.
