Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Students will learn the origins of modern English words by studying Latin and Greek root words. This class covers the top 100 most used Greek and Latin root words. (25 each week)

Students will be able to add prefixes and suffixes to form various vocabulary words. Such as the root word SCRIPT (to write) add pre- and -ion to form the word preSCRIPTion, or P.S. PostSCRIPT meaning after writing and so forth.

Homework will consist of several vocabulary words formed from often used root words. A root word will be provided for study of meaning and then other words will be formed by adding prefixes and suffixes. (some memorization of root words will be required)

We will also look at how adding prefixes and suffixes change or enhance the original meaning of the root word. References to familiar words will aid in understanding where appropriate as in the root word ALBUS meaning (white) or CHRONOS, CHRON meaning time as in CHRONological order.

This class is designed to aid with spelling and grammar as well as contextual word meaning.

Learning Goals

By learning one hundred plus of both Latin and Greek root words, each student has the potential to understand at least five words per root word learned, meaning after this course, each student could possibly increase their vocabulary by five hundred words.
