US Grade 7 - 10
Each week students will receive a list of 5-10 Greek and Latin roots, definitions, examples, and base words. Students will work with the roots by practicing them, examining them in context, and seeing many examples. Students will submit a Flipgrid of the words, the definitions, an example word, and an explanation of how the root helps them understand the example word. At the end of the week there will be a quiz that focuses not just on rote memorization but also on application. Students will learn how knowing the roots helps them expand the by being able to puzzle through new words based on what they know the roots mean. Each week will be cumulative, building on the previous weeks words. By the end of the semester, students will be familiar with nearly 100 common roots. Students will practice these roots in context as well as work on being able to explain and identify new words. They will learn which roots are suffixes or prefixes and how they helps them create and identify new words. This is an invaluable skill for building reading comprehension as well as scoring higher on standardized tests such as the SAT. Students will study together by sharing Flipgrids, Kahoots, and self created mnemonic devices with other learners. The teacher will supply all learning and study materials. Quizzes may completed more than once if the desired grade is not achieved on the first attempt. The goal is mastery of these roots, not just pure memorization. Students will be able to apply their knowledge of roots to words in any context to help figure out meaning of new words or words they are unsure of.
Learning Goals
Students will expand their vocabulary and reading comprehension through study of Greek and Latin roots.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Indiana Teaching Certificate in Secondary Education
Hello! My name is Mrs. Henry, and I am a licensed secondary English teacher. I have taught 7-12 grade in a traditional classroom setting for the past 9 years. My repertoire of taught classes includes 7th-8th grade Language Arts, Accelerated Language Arts, 9th grade English, and high school creative writing (the curriculum for this class I designed myself!). I have also led a creative writing club as well as a writing lab.
Creative writing and British Literature are subjects I am most passionate about, but I'm in this field because I love all aspects of it: grammar, formal writing, literature, creative writing, and informational text. I would love to teach you about poetry, help you fine tune a story you're working on, lead you through the process of a research paper, deepen your understanding of grammar and semantics, or discuss the fine details of your favorite book. I love helping students through any part of the writing process as well as the rich discussions that come from digging in deep to a story or text.
