Class Experience

Learners will be introduced to basic Mendelian Genetics. We will cover dominant and recessive genes, Punnett squares and some special case inheritance types. The class will be a lecture based class with slides and lots of time for questions and interaction. I like to ask the students for input as we go and work lots of examples along the way. Students will get to breed their own dragon and draw its characters. However, this is not meant to be a drawing class. We will only be sketching and coloring to cement our understanding of inheritance.

Learning Goals

Students will learn basic Mendelian Genetics and how to work out simple genetics problems.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hey all you parents of budding learners out there! I am really excited to meet your super scientists. I have been teaching children in non-formal education settings for 12 years. My first experience teaching children was about 12 years ago when I worked for my university's bug zoo. It was so much fun! I loved it and continued to work for the bug zoo as I pursued my B.S. in Entomology. When I began my M.S. I continued to work with children by entertaining at birthday parties with my insect collection and live insects. Then as a PhD. I continued entertaining and started working at the bug zoo again. When I completed my PhD in entomology I went to work for a field laboratory. This laboratory hosted lots of children's events. So I designed many nature based explorations for various age groups over the five years I spent as the Manager of the field laboratory. When I had my first baby I started working as an adjunct at the local university and started teaching more formal biology classes out of my home. Recently all universities have been hard hit by COVID, including mine. They had to lay off all adjuncts due to enrollment shortfalls. So I am looking for more avenues to teach kids outside of the formal setting. I am excited to teach all ages as my experience is with kids from PreK - high school. Send me your super scientists and we will have fun!
