What's included

6 live meetings
3 in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Please note: Students will need to practice a minimum of 1-2 hours every week to stay on top of class material. Sight-reading fluency is essential to learning class pieces.
Assessment
I will offer feedback after students perform an exercise and, if needed, provide suggestions to help the student master the concept. Mistakes are a part of learning a musical instrument! So students should not worry if they play the exercise or a piece correct on the first try. Together we will learn how to progress through new music and learn new musical concepts.

Class Experience

Please note: This class picks up where Beginning Piano Level G leaves off. Prospective students should be able to read standard notation in C position and G position, be able to identify accidentals in music, understand how to use dynamic contrast (crescendo, diminuendo etc), and have an understanding of articulation markings. Sight reading music is essential to this class so prospective students should be comfortable with reading music in the first half of Level 2B Piano Adventures series (material from Level G). In this class, students will continue to develop their sight-reading skills, learn how to play more expressively, read and play in different time signatures and continue to develop dynamic control and phrasing.

Week One: Discover AB musical form and learn the rules for the damper pedal. We will learn new ledger lines notes B and A below the treble clef.

Week Two: Review pieces from week one. Practice playing a piece in ABA form. We will discover the eighth rest and play a new piece using the eighth rest rhythm.

Week Three: Learn the dotted quarter note. Learn a piece using cross-hand arpeggios and pedaling. Learn to play from a lead sheet. Review the I, IV and V chords in the key of C.

Week Four: Learn a simple blues in the key of C. Learn an arrangement of New World Symphony by Antontin Dvorák. Learn I, IV and V chords in the key of G and use them in a new piece. Play a new piece using cross-hand arpeggios.

Week Five: Review previous material. Learn the F Major Scale. Learn a new piece in the key of F. Discover the I, IV and V chord voicings for the key of F.

Week Six: Review previous material. Learn Aria and Auld Lang Syne. Prepare a piece of your choice to present in class.
