Description

Class Experience

Aside from having an opportunity to spend time with friends, each learner will build their own keepsake lapbook. During our meetings, learners will learn to analyze literature, construct a paragraph with strong sentences, and create their own lapbook art amongst other surprises. Most of all, I hope learners find a love for reading and enjoyment with their writing.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my course! If we've not met before...hello! My name is Melissa and I am an IEW Certified Instructor, ELA educator, and long-time fan of all things literature! More importantly, my goal is to promote a love of learning while offering a safe and fun environment. I truly have a passion for reading and writing and would love to share my knowledge and experience with your children.
After each class, a chapter will be assigned for the next meeting. In order for your child to participate in the conversation, I kindly ask that you encourage them to stick with the reading schedule.
* Learners must have a copy of "Dinosaurs Before Dark" by Mary Pope Osborne to participate in class.
* 1x File Folder (These are usually manilla with a tab at the top. If you are unable to find one near you, please let me know.)
* Scissors
* Glue and/or Tape
* Something to color with: crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc.
* Something to write with: pen, pencil, etc.
* PDF printables will be posted to the classroom page upon registration. Please note that you will want to print these out before our first meeting.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
This is not a graded class. Instead, the goal is to promote a love for reading and writing through a subject your learner enjoys.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Please note that scissors, glue, and/or tape will be needed to build the lapbook. I highly recommend helping your leaner if they are unable to use scissors safely. Please take any precautions necessary based on your learner's individual needs and abilities.

Below is a note from Common Sense Media regarding this book. Please make sure that you've reviewed the material in this book and are comfortable with your child discussing the novel as part of a literary analysis.

"Parents need to know that there's nothing of concern here, and much that is educational. Jack and Annie encounter friendly dinosaurs, gathering a few scientific facts about each one and sparking imaginations. While the short sentences may have adults yawning, kids will learn to read with them."

One final note. I do use games to review at the end of the course. Two educational learning tools I like to use are Kahoot! and Gimkit. Please note that you do NOT need an account to join. I will send the link and the game code to play during class.
