Charlotte Mason, a turn of the century educator, once said, "The question is not - how much does the youth know when he has finished his education - but how much does he care? And about how many orders of things does he care? In fact, how large is the room in which he finds his feet set?" The methods of Charlotte Mason will guide this course through a 12 week language arts term where the materials presented will not only address the student's needs for a language arts curriculum, but will...
Students will learn to create oral compositions that retell the main ideas and events of a story. Students will memorize classic children's poetry. Students will improve their handwriting, spelling, and punctuation skills.
Some reading chapters may not be completed in class. Students will need to read or listen to the remainder of an assigned chapter. The teacher will provide bonus videos of the reading passages for students to watch/listen to in the case that the chapter is not finished live. The reading would be no more than 5-7 pages outside of class. Students will complete copywork passages and illustrations that will be uploaded to the classroom or emailed to the teacher, based on individual preference. These assignments will take 10 minutes or less. Students will memorize a short poem. The poem should be read each day of the week and the student can create a video of themselves and post it in the classroom, or recite it during the live meeting. Recitation practice will take 5 minutes or less per day.
The students will need: - a sketchbook - writing and drawing utensils of their choice (pencils, colored pencils, etc) Optionally, the students would benefit from having a copy of The Trumpet of the Swan, by E.B. White.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Grades are available upon request. Please message me at the beginning of the course if you would like grades for the work in this course.
