Landing Santa's Sleigh on Any Kind of Landform

*If you are in my Monday preschool class, this is the class that we will be doing on Dec. 6th.* When Santa and his reindeer fly around the world delivering presents, he encounters many different types of terrain and landforms. His sleigh is designed ideally to be used in the snow. Can your little engineer help our team design modifications for a sleigh that could enable Santa to visit mountains, caves, volcanoes, or islands? First, we will take a look at the runners on Santa's sleigh and talk about sliding and sledding on snow and ice. Then I will introduce the letter 'L' for landform, learn, land, love, list, letters, and lights. We will practice writing our names and uppercase/lowercase L's. We will talk about the definition of a landform. When we are all prepared for our field work, we will head out to a volcano, see what a volcano is, and talk about the dangers and problems that Santa might face if he needed to land his sleigh to deliver near a volcano. We will brainstorm ideas to help keep Santa safe but still be able to accomplish the task. We will also go through this same process at a plain, mountain, island, cave, and glacier. Along the way, we will be reinforcing learning of the letter 'L' by using lights to see in the cave, checking Santa's list, reading his letters, landing the sleigh, and gaining a love for learning!
Learning Goals
Engineering - Inspiring little learners to think like an engineer to solve problems for Santa.
