In this 5-week class, students will learn about the life of the iconic Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. Students will gain an understanding of how her life impacted her intriguing art pieces. Class will end by creating our own self-portraits.

Have you ever taken a moment to look at the art of Frida Kahlo? What's up with her unibrow, the flowers on her head, her holding hands with her... self? So many questions and so few answers! That is, until you take this class, of course. We will be diving into the life and art of one of the most iconic female artists in the world. Originally from Mexico, her artwork teaches us so much about the culture there, her eclectic life and even the human experience in general. How can suffering be...
This class is taught in Spanish.
Students will analyze the impact that the life of Frida Kahlo had on her art. Students will apply their understanding to the creation of their own self-portraits.
I have my BS. Ed. in K-12 Spanish Education and have taught this unit several times in public schools. I also lived in Mexico from January to August of 2018.
Homework Offered
Students may continue to study materials outside of class if they would like to dive deeper. Students may use class time to create their self-portraits, but they may also require some time outside of class depending how elaborate they would like these to be.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will be assessed through TPR, yes/no questioning, sequencing activities, and journal activitiesGrades Offered
Students will need any supplies required for their self-portrait. This may be as simple as Microsoft Paint or another digital platform or as elaborate as they wish (i.e. paints, paper mache, embellished photos, etc.)

Some life events may be upsetting for some learners. For example, Frida had polio and she had a difficult relationship with her husband Diego. These themes will be approached in a respectful manner that is age-appropriate. Some paintings by Frida are also not age-appropriate. I will not be showing these in class.
