Welcome to the Kwanzaa Creativity Camp for Kids! Our one-hour daily camp is designed to inspire creativity and celebrate the principle of Kuumba during the joyous week of Kwanzaa. I have a BA in English and an MLA in Humanities. I am the author of the Kwanzaa Princess, a picture book for young children. I serve as a local expert on cultural and religious holidays in the the DC Metro area.
Students will need: Colored paper White paper Notebook paper Glue sticks Markers Crayons Colored pencils 3 or 4 medium sized rocks Scissors Magazines Posterboard Jar Pens or pencils
This course is focused on the culture and crafts of Kwanzaa. Discussions will be limited to the arts and culture of the holiday. A brief history of the holiday will be shared to provide context for the holiday (i.e. the founder and the date of the first Kwanzaa celebrated). We will not dive into deep histories and politics.
We will use the The Seven Days of Kwanzaa and How to Celebrate Them by Angela Shelf Medearis, Together for Kwanzaa by Juwanda G. Ford, The Story Behind Kwanzaa by Melissa Rae Shower, and Seven Candles for Kwanzaa by Andrea Davis Pinkney.
