Class Experience

Nursery rhymes, songs, poems, proverbs, and sayings are all essential parts of both languages and cultures. Often, it isn't enough to simply translate these expressions of a culture to understand what they mean, how to use them, and how they fit into the language patterns.

This class is designed for students who already know some Swedish to practice pronunciation and the melody of the Swedish language. (This is not the level five class in the series of Swedish courses that will focus on conversations)

Every class will start with asking and answering questions, including: What is your name? How are you? How is the weather by you? and What did you have for breakfast?

Week 1: Read and sing the song Lille Katt.

Week 2: Two nursery rhymes and eight tongue twisters- read, pronounce, and discuss what they mean

Week 3: Read the poem "Inte ens" by Nils Ferlin and a poem by Tove Jansson and discuss the meaning. Practice to read poetry in Swedish

Week 4: Listen to and read "Jag saknar dig mindre" och mindre by Melissa Horn. Discuss the word choices and understand the meaning.

Week 5: Proverbs and sayings read, pronounce, and understand their place in the Swedish language and culture.

There will be a document with all the poems, songs, tongue twisters, etc., in the classroom that can be printed out or viewed during the class.
