Class experience
In this course, students will discover the world of Rome in AD 64 by meeting a family that lives in the Subura and studying the language of and mythology of the Romans. The course will involve reading, writing, acting and using Latin both actively and as part of everyday English. ESL learners are welcome, and some of the classroom interaction will be in Latin. Students will learn about Latin and the Romans as part of an exploration of life in antiquity and the linguistic diversity of the ancient world. By the end of the course, students will have a sound understanding of the structure and sounds of the Latin language, and will have developed their linguistic awareness to help them use language in a more confident and intentional way.
I have a degree in Classics and I am a qualified teacher. I have been teaching about the Greeks and Romans to students of all ages and backgrounds for more than 15 years. Please do not hesistate to get in touch if you have any questions about the potentially sensitive topics that we will cover.
Access to the Suburani online coursebook and interactive exercises for the duration of the course is included in the price. Additionally, students can also purchase the a physical copy of the book from the distributor. Other than this, students should have a dedicated folder to the subject and, ideally, a vocabulary notebook.
The behaviours and attitudes displayed in the story reflect those in Roman times and will include references to sexist attitudes, enslavement of peoples and violence. These topics will not be avoided but explored, and students will be encouraged to examine them.
