Class Experience

January 21st is the start of the Korean Lunar New Year! Let's make a craft together. Teacher Elaine will use slides to identify South Korea. She will explain that Koreans celebrate holidays using a different calendar. The main focus is to craft a fan and have fun. The goal is to provide young learners with the opportunity to make a fan for the Korean Lunar New Year.

Tricolored Taegeuk

"A popular variant in Korea is the Tricolored Taegeuk (삼색의태극 Sam Saeg-ui Taegeuk, 三色太極), which adds a yellow lobe or "pa" 파 (巴), representing humanity, to the red and blue pa which represent heaven & earth. The Samtaegeuk is frequently seen as a design on the face of hand fans. A rendition of the Tricolored Taegeuk also appeared in the official logo of the 1988 Summer Olympics, accompanied by the five Olympic rings."

In this interactive class, students will have fun making a tricolor Korean fan in celebration of the Lunar New Year! Teacher Elaine will briefly mention the Korean Lunar and what each color represents. Young learners will color or paint heavy card stock or lightweight cardboard with the symbolic colors of red, blue, and yellow. Students will:

1. Gather supplies

I have taught ESL online to South Korean students for almost 8 years. For several years, I have had vacation time during the major Korean holidays. My Korean employers and South Korean students have educated me about some of their customs and traditions. As a result, I have come to learn about and respect the South Korean culture.
