Weekly lessons will include voice warm ups where we explore the possibilities of the human voice, and develop muscle memory. During warm ups, we will learn about the anatomy of the voice including the diaphragm, the larynx, the soft palate, and the nasopharynx. In addition to understanding the physicality of singing, we will use imagery, movement, and play, in order to access different parts of the voice comfortably. The last part of the lesson will be used to work on songs which will involve music theory, ear training, and improvisation. All of the skills learned in lessons will be tailored to the individual students interests. For instance, if they wanted to sing pop music, we would focus on understanding common song structure's and chord progressions, whereas, if a student wanted to learn classical singing, we would focus on reading notation. Through learning songs, we will also talk about the performance aspects of singing including stage presence and acting.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to:
- identify what healthy singing feels like
- create awareness of vocal sensations through an understanding of anatomy and the creation of mental maps
- learn music effectively. This could involve learning music through reading notation, chord charts, and by ear, depending on what type of music the student is interested in.
- improvise
Most importantly this course is designed to give students agency over their voices
