The class series will allow each student to learn the basics of casting on, knitting the knit stitch, following simple pattern instructions, counting the stitches and rows, casting off, and using the sewing needle to finish the work. Each lesson will include: project instruction and skill demonstration, a short animal story or a fable telling, working together, and independent work during 1on1 work check-in for each student. Time...

I have been knitting since the early age of 6 and love creating toys, gits, clothing, and accessories using various knitting techniques and skills. As a Waldorf Class and Handwork Teacher (since 2011), I have had the joy of teaching knitting, sewing, felting, crocheting, and embroidery to children and parents of various ages.
Each week students will be asked to complete a certain number of rows outside of class. Estimated 1 to 2 hours of work outside of class time can be expected during the week, depending on the student's skill. For younger learners, it may be best to split this time into 15 minute periods throughout the week.
Supplies: 2 regular knitting needles, 2 double-pointed knitting needles of the same size, yarn of choice, a tapestry sewing needle suitable for sewing with yarn, wool roving for the stuffing, a small pair of scissors, a notepad, and a few colored pencils. * Please ensure that the thickness of yarn you choose matches the needle size you choose. ** We will all follow the same pattern, but the thicker yarn will create a larger item. :) *** The most important thing when choosing yarn and needles for this class is to make sure the thickness of the yarn and the size of the needles are a good match. That info is usually on the yarn label. From my experience, most beginner level students do very well choosing needles size US 8 or US 9 and matching yarn. Brown Sheep Lamb-s Pride Worsted Yarn (available online) is a good example of the yarn that works very well with needle size US 9. Other types of wool or wool blend yarns in that thickness will work well, too. Clover brand of knitting needles offers reasonably priced bamboo knitting needles in all standard sizes (also available online).
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Completion of the project and participation in the presentation time during the last lesson will serve as a form of self-assessment. Students who advance more quickly will have the opportunity to make additional animals using the skills they learn in class. (Examples: a bird, a rabbit)
1 hour 50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Parents are welcome to assist the students, but it is not a requirement.
