Class Experience

Students will gain a basic understanding of feudalism and be able to compare and contrast its forms in Medieval Japanese and European society. They will be able to identify the places that the knights and the samurai held in these societies. They will examine the similarities and differences between the armor and weaponry of knights and samurai. Finally, they learn about chivalry and bushido and how these warrior codes affected the lives of knights and samurai.
I have a Bachelor's degree in history and graduated with high honors in 2018, having studied and researched a broad range of history. With regards to this particular class, I studied Medieval Europe for 2 semesters and Japan for 4 semesters. I wrote a 100 page thesis in Japanese history on the role of a group of samurai in Japan's modernization in the 1800s. I also minored in Japanese language and literature. As for teaching, I have worked in a variety of educational settings ranging from schools to museums for the past three years and have my CE in Social Studies Education K-12 from the State of NJ.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 15 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
Given the topic, discussion of warfare and violence will be part of this class. We will be talking about warriors, their weapons, their codes, and their deeds. Learners will be shown paintings and other artistic renditions of warfare. The class will not include any graphic or disturbing details, but any discussion of warfare can be sensitive for some young learners. It will be age appropriate for the prescribed age, 10-15.
