Class Experience
Healthy low carb eating never tasted so good. In this flex class, students with instructor guidance will make tried and true low carb recipes with fresh ingredients that will satisfy even the pickiest eater. Each week we will cook a new category (listed below). Full ingredient lists and prep instructions will be given out a week before class begins. Students will share their finished recipes on our Outschool classroom board, where they can also ask any questions. Class Interaction: ...
Measuring: Students will learn fractions, which cups to use and when. Timing: How to multi-task and serve while food is still hot. Kitchen Tools and Equipment: This will vary per student, but instructor will guide them with their choices. While this is a food-oriented class, the focus is on cooking techniques. Nutrition and Diet are not part of this curriculum. However, we will talk briefly about why some choose a low carb lifestyle and how to incorporate it into everyday life.
Professor Jennifer Hughes has been an educator and attorney for over 20 years. Her passion for cooking began in her family's restaurants when she was growing up. Over the years she has taken countless cooking classes and conducted many workshops and group classes. On Outschool she runs the Self-Confidence Project and teaches many Government, History, Law and Speech and Debate Courses. In her free time, she is mom to 5 boys and 2 girls, many now grown and loves to swim, travel and throw tea parties.
There may be a small amount of recipe prep that the instructor will tell students ahead of class. Students will also be responsible for obtaining ingredients and supplies. Optional: Students should post finished recipes and give 1-5 stars with an explanation. I find this helps them remember if this is something they want to try again or if they made a mistake how they can make it better next time.
A week before class begins a supply list will be provided. Instructions for our class will be provided a few days before class for students to review. Students will use common household items. Mixers and Food Processors are helpful but not necessary.
Parents are welcome to contact instructor with questions. If this class is being used as an elective or for credit hours, instructor will provide proof of completion
No live meetings, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
• Students should be comfortable using a knife and a stove and an instant pot if that is the route they choose. They should also prepare their workspace ahead of time, making sure it is clean for hygienic purposes. • Parental supervision is essential for safety. Students will not need to create a Kahoot or Canva account. Teacher will provide links for class purposes. ALLERGY STATEMENT: Ingredients for recipes may include common allergens such as Dairy, Eggs, Fish, Shellfish, Tree Nuts, Peanuts, Wheat & Soy. If the learner has dietary restrictions, please contact the instructor so she may be able to suggest ways to adapt the recipe, typically by substitution, or omission of the allergen. (Requires at least 72 hours' notice.) Not all recipes can be adapted. Instructor does not have the ability to ensure that the items you purchase will be completely free of allergens. It's up to the adults responsible for each learner to ensure that products brought into the learners' kitchens are allergen-free.
Handouts will be provided in Word format by instructor.
