In this one-time class, discover how fun it is to create beats and rhythms that mimic the sounds of percussion instruments: drums, shakers, and scrapers—using what can be found (mainly) in the kitchen!

Class experience

This class is taught in English.
Students will create beats and rhythms from the playing of non-traditional rhythm instruments to recreate the three Ss of rhythm: striking, shaking, and scraping.
As “The Percussion Lady,” I have been teaching specialty hand drumming and rhythm classes and workshops for preschool, pre-kindergarten, and school-age children for over 20 years. These sessions have always been hands-on, with a focus not only on technique, but on engendering social skills such as listening, taking turns, cooperating, and following direction. I have always strived for an educational yet quirky experience!

Then in early 2020 the pandemic occurred, and in-person classes and events at schools and day care centers were closed to me. During this period of introspection and re-evaluation, the idea of developing a virtual-based kitchen percussion class was born: why not introduce the joy and excitement of learning introductory beats and rhythms to those who are home?

My overarching goal for this class was—and still is—to demonstrate that the lack of “real” instruments—like actual drums, tambourines, and maracas—should not be a barrier to entry! You can find your rhythm instruments in your kitchen or acquire them inexpensively at a local discount or thrift store.

All you need are a willingness to be creative and, of course, to be loud.

Once a student is registered for the class, a one-page handout with suggested materials will be provided.
Parents will need to help collect/organize the required percussion for their child BEFORE the actual class date.

Further: depending on the needs of the child, parents might need to be present during the class to help with the playing of instruments and/or with basic Zoom functions (like using the microphone, camera, raise hand, and mute button).
Other than standard Outschool tools and Zoom functions, learners will not need to use any other apps or websites.
