Class Experience

A child may have a variety of different needs, but they are just like us! They might like to play, enjoy videos, love going outside to the park, or just hanging out with their friends. They have feelings just like us, and there is no reason to feel sad for them.

In this ongoing course, students will have the opportunity to share their knowledge and understanding, or ask questions, about common disabilities of people they may see around them. We will start each class period going over the different topics we will focus on for the day and seeing if any students have any prior knowledge relating to them or if they know anybody with the conditions. Students will see children and adults with different needs in a variety of ways (videos, books, photos, etc.) and some weeks will become more aware of disabilities by "experiencing" what it might be like to live with aspects of the condition.

*My ultimate goals in this course are for students to have a safe space to ask questions that others may also have, learn a little bit more about differences between people, and get a basic introduction of the most common types of disabilities seen in childhood.

Week of February 7th
"We learn differently."
- An introduction to Dyslexia, ADHD, Speech Impediments, and Color Blindness
- Comprehension quiz

Week of February 14th

- Discussion on proper etiquette when we want to ask people questions about their equipment

*February 14th will be the final meeting date until June 2021 due to change in work schedule*

*I do offer an 8-week course covering some of the topics we will cover. Please request a time/day that works if interested in scheduling*

Parental Guidance
All I ask of your student is that they enter this course with an open mind and an appropriate/non-judgemental attitude. In this course, students will be discussing disabilities and practicing different etiquette when interacting with people they haven't met before who may have disabilities. This will be a very general overview and introduction to topics with simple language. If a student has a disability/knows someone with a disability we will discuss in class (found in the weekly outline listed above), I am not asking them to share any experience on the topic, unless they feel comfortable. I will not be able to guess what questions will be asked by students during class time. If the question seems appropriate and I feel I can correctly give them an answer, I will address it in class so other students can hear. If I deem the question inappropriate to the topic, I will pass the question on to you to discuss with your child at your discretion.
Supply List
It is optional for students to have paper and a writing utensil if they want to write down information they learn each week. This is not a requirement.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have my WI DPI Special Ed. Aide license which is current through June 2023. I currently work for my neighboring school district as a paraprofessional in many classrooms (ages 5-21). I have personally worked with students who have had many of these disabilities I will touch on. I also currently work as a Behavior Technician and provide ABA therapy to teach children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) communication development, behavior regulation, play, and daily living skills in their homes. I am very comfortable answering any student questions I can correctly give an answer to regarding these topics.
