Kindness Club: Social-Learning Time to Practice Being and Spotting Good Friends
What's included
5 live meetings
2 hrs 30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
During this class that meets 30 minutes each week for five weeks, learners will explore characteristics of good friends while having fun! Each week, a new topic related to friendship will be introduced, and learners will be given time to practice the skills by interacting with their peers in the class. Weekly hands-on activities and crafts will be integrated as well to engage learners and provide more opportunity to interact with peers through parallel tasks. The content will be delivered through social stories, puppets, games, slides, songs, and discussion over the course of the five weeks. Week 1 - What Makes a Good Friend: We will complete introductions, identify characteristics of a good vs. a bad friend, and complete a short craft to reinforce key concepts. Week 2 - How to be a Kind and Helpful Friend: The social skill of empathy will be introduced through puppets and social stories as learners practice identifying how others might feel. We will explore ways to be helpful after noticing the feelings of another and discuss how kindness can lead to making and keeping friends. Week 3 - How to be a Respectful and Assertive Friend: In week 3, learners will discuss respect and practice assertive communication as a brief introduction to these skills that are critical for successful peer problem-solving. We will complete a craft to learn more about respectful ways to communicate and express needs (e.g., asking a peer to stop name calling). Week 4 - How to be a Fair and Sharing Friend: We will explore ways to play with peers in a fair and respectful manner. A brief introduction to solving problems with peers as it relates to telling versus tattling will be included as we learn together with puppet friends. Learners will be given the opportunity to practice skills related to fair play, and a short craft will help reinforce key objectives. Week 5 - How to Celebrate Differences and Good Friends: As the class wraps-up, we will discuss friendship with others who have different likes or interests as a way to encourage celebration of these differences. Learners will review and reflect on topics explored during the prior four weeks of Kindness Club and complete a concluding friendship craft.
