KinderPhonics opens the door for Kindergartners to begin to read. Using the Dolch 200 Sight Words list and Orton Gillingham strategies, we start out with the simplest 2-and 3-letter words, and high frequency words. Then we move to 4-letter words with short vowels, then digraphs. Each class period we will incorporate multi-sensory practice including writing, but we also take time to sing some songs, listen to stories, play some alphabet sorting games, and/or watch some age-appropriate, letter-/sound-related You Tube videos. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HAVING SOME SIMPLE, INEXPENSIVE MANIPULATIVES ON HAND. Typically, this includes things like pipe cleaners, a hot wheels car, shaving cream in a ziploc baggie or on a paper plate, play-doh; scrabble tiles, etc. We can be quite flexible when it comes to things we can use. I've even made scrabble-style letter "tiles" from dried (uncooked) lima beans before, and they work brilliantly. For more information on manipulatives, see the "Supplies" section. Research shows that phonics is best learned when taught at a quick pace, even though some students may not understand something the first time around, because phonics is filled with a lot of repetition and review. So feel free to join us at any time! Week of: Topic: 2/13/23 in, it, the, and, said 2/20/23 you, is, up 2/27/23 for, look, we, go 3/6/23 can, see, not, little 3/13/23 review what we've already learned 3/20/23 he, me, with, all, they 3/27/23 was, she, on, but, at 4/3/23 big, do, like, are, no 4/10/23 review what we've learned

Supply List
Students should always bring paper and a pencil to class, as well as any materials posted in the classroom. They should also have manipulatives available like scrabble tiles (or bananagrams, or even lima beans with letters written on them!), pipe cleaners, play-doh, letter stickers, letter stamps, or letter magnets available. We also do a lot of coloring, so crayons or washable markers should also be available.

Missouri Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hi there! My name is Ms. Kelly and I am currently teaching elementary STEM. I graduated from Southwest Missouri State University with a Bachelor's degree in secondary education, in Latin, Speech, and Theatre/Acting. I also completed premedical studies and spent 26 years in healthcare. My talents and hobbies include writing, ceramics, and gardening, and I am an award-winning amateur photographer. With my passions in mind, I teach phonics, spelling, and writing to our young kids, science and writing to middle schoolers, and Latin to all ages including high schoolers. I also have a lot of experience with gifted children and their unique educational needs.
Also, as a mom of three ADHD boys, I know that sitting still and listening doesn't equate to learning. Kids learn best when they're moving and having fun, so humor and silliness play a big role in all my classes, so expect classes that are interactive and upbeat, in order to keep the kids engaged. I hope to see your learners in class soon!
