Class Experience

Kindergarten, ages 5-6, is a very special time for reading development! During this year, many children start learning to read. It's critical for developing readers to enjoy reading. It is the love of reading, the enjoyment and comfort of it, that sets kids up for a love of reading that endures throughout life. Kids will remember, and often keep, their favorite books for all time. I've still got Richard Scary's "What Do People Do All Day" and a collection of Beatrix Potter stories, among other well-loved books.

Decoding, fluency, and comprehension are important, and will inherently improve as children's reading enjoyment grows-your child will automatically more easily decode (read) words, learn more vocabulary words, more spelling patterns, and more intuitively understand what they've read if they simply read or are read to often and consistently.

Your child can come to class and simply enjoy a story or two with other kindergartners. The first story we will read is a picture book or reader that is at kindergarten level. I have many emerging readers that I’ll upload for your little ones, like “In The Fall” or “I Can See Christmas”. They have simple words, repetitive text, and cute graphics! The second picture book we will read is a best-listened to-aloud story, which is not at kindergarten level. This second book is to encourage even further a love of reading and being read to.

You can feel confident that your child is in a safe and gentle atmosphere, facilitated by a licensed language arts teacher, with no pressure to "academic", while also understanding that what we do in class is actually one of the very best ways to strengthen those academics! A plethora of research corroborates the evidence that reading to a child is of utmost importance.
