Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten
In this class, young writers will learn that writing is a way to express thoughts on paper. The children will work productively during class and generate topics, plan writing, and record their thoughts on paper. The goal is to teach the writing process by first drawing a picture and then moving on from drawing to phonetics to sounding out words. Students are motivated because the can choose a topic that is important to them. We will share our writings with our classmates!
Students will plan their stories across pages and will add details to their pictures using letter-sound correspondence. Some of our lessons will be studying and creating pattern books with repetition. Pattern books are a great way for young writers to learn how to write words and sentences . The students will learn how to stretch out words and use phonetic spelling. They will be introduced to writing tools such as alphabet charts and sight words. We will also review labeling and adding more details to our pictures.
Week 1- Writers match labels to their illustrations
Week 2- Writers write the first sound they hear in their writing
Week 3- Writers use the alphabet chart to help them find the letter sound
Week 4- Writers copy words around the room (sight words)
Week 5- Writers create a pattern book
Week 6 - Writers stretch out words and use phonetic spelling in their pattern books
Week 7- Writers make sure their pictures match words
Week 8 - Writers revise their pattern books
