Description
Class Experience
The learner will grow in their phonological awareness (global awareness of sound) and phonemic awareness (identifying individual sounds in spoken words) through games, while also using comprehension, social, and language skills as they participate in the poem.
My educational background prepared me for teaching all subjects K-6. However, my online ESL teaching and extensive research into many different reading programs has increased my effectiveness in teaching reading and reading readiness. Teaching English as a Second Language with a high emphasis on sound pronunciation has helped develop my skills in teaching the umbrella category of phonological awareness. Extensively researching science-based reading programs and strategies for different learners in my own homeschool and community has allowed me to blend the best and most effective parts of each program for the individual learners I work with. I believe this science-based research and experience will translate to my online learners as well.
No homework assigned, but reading aloud together is highly encouraged!
1 file available upon enrollmentDuring class: One sheet white paper with one medium-sized oval drawn on it Green crayon or colored pencil *Scissors Space to jump After class: "Green oval add-ons" worksheet, if Learner desires to make the toad seen at the end of class :)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The learners will be monitored as they participate in class games. The parent will be provided with a follow up message that includes strategies for improvement. I do recognize that online learning can be intimidating and some learners need to warm up to a class or teacher. In these cases the follow-up message will include several different ideas for parents to enjoy with their kids regardless of participation during class time.
25 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Learners will be coloring, cutting, jumping, and clapping in this class. Parental assistance might be needed for help and adjustment of camera positions. Thank you!
We will refer to the poem, The Caterpillar by Christina Rossetti, in class. Christina Rossetti has many enjoyable poems for children available online.
