Class Experience

This class is designed for students who are going into kindergarten. It is meant as a pre-k review to help keep the material fresh in the students’ minds. There may also be brief introductions to kindergarten material depending on the class.

Students will practice various pre-k math, phonics, and reading skills through use of games, songs, stories, and activities. Skills practiced will include: identifying letters and letter sounds, identifying numbers, counting 1-20, some sight words, identifying colors and 2-D shapes, completing patterns, and rhyming. The following is a flexible guide for how class will be structured:
1. Greeting, Calendar, Welcome Message (3-5 minutes)
2. Letter/Letter Sound Practice (5-7 minutes)
3. Phonics Skill Practice (5-7 minutes)
4. Math Skill Practice (5-7 minutes)
5. Good bye (1 minute)

Topics will be as follows:
Week 1: letters A/B/C, syllables, patterns
Week 2: letters D/E/F, sight word game, counting to add to 5
Week 3: letters G/H/I, rhyming, 2-D shapes
Week 4: letters J/K/L, sight word game, counting groups to 10
Week 5: letters M/N/O, onset and rime blending, beginning sounds, writing numbers to 10, discussing numbers 11-15
Week 6: letters P/Q/R, sight word activity, colors
Week 7: letters S/T/U, rhyming, 2-D shapes
Week 8: letters V/W/X, sight word game, discussing numbers 16-20
Week 9: letters Y/Z, sounds, rhyming, patterns
Week 10: letter sound activity, patterns, drawing pictures to represent numbers to 5, sight word game
Week 11: letter sound game, colors, syllables
Week 12: letter sound activity, shapes, sight word game

It is expected that students will have at least a basic prior knowledge of identification of letter sounds, numbers 1-20, colors, and 2-D shapes. This is an ongoing class, so students can take as many or as few of the classes as desired.
