To start each class, I love to greet each child as they enter the classroom and connect with them by asking a fun question. We begin by playing a warm-up game and then trying to figure out what is in the Mystery Box. The Mystery Box holds a special item related to our weekly theme. We read clues together and then guess what could be in the box! Before we read the clues, we will search for letters, vowels, consonant blends as well as find sight words and identifying word families. It is so exciting to find out what is in the box each day! I love stuffed animals so many days there is a special stuffed animal that joins us.

Throughout each class, we have ELA, language arts, literacy and math activities and games that go along with our weekly theme.

Calendar Math activities will help us learn about the month, day, and year, do patterning and math activities. We will also have a Mystery Number of the day where we will learn to write numbers, learn about different ways to show the number such as the number, number word, tally marks, the tens frame, and place value. We will explore different ways to count such as counting to 100 and counting to 100 by 10's. We will learn basic addition and subtraction. We will share about our weather and graph the weather at our different locations and learn about reading and interpreting graphs.

Math skills that we will explore together throughout this class are:
Graphing - reading and interpreting a graph
Counting and skip counting
Identifying and writing numbers
Learning the number words
Demonstrating different ways to make the number
Reading a number line
Tally Marks
Tens Frame
Place Value
Addition and subtraction
Identify and draw 2D shapes
Identify 3D shapes
Learning position and number order words

Each day we will have a Mystery Letter which will help us learn about the letters! We will practice writing the uppercase and lowercase letters using correct letter formation. We will play letter and sound games and sing songs to learn and reinforce the letter sounds. Even though we will focus on the Mystery Letters of the week, we will also review the other letters and sounds, consonant blends, digraphs, diphthongs, vowel combinations, and more!

We will explore phonics together making, building and reading CVC words. We will learn how words are formed and learn to read words. We will also have fun rhyming and finding syllables for words.

Literacy and phonics skills that we will explore are:
Identifying and writing the letters - uppercase and lowercase
Learning the letter sounds
Vowels/Consonants
Syllables
Blending letter sounds
Rhyming
Identifying the beginning, middle and ending sounds in words
Making words
Word families
Reading and writing sight words
Diphthongs
Digraphs
Consonant blends
Vowel combinations
Tricky vowels

Each day, we will read a special Morning Message together and answer the question of the day. Through our Morning Message, we will learn to read and write new sight words as well as play sight word games to reinforce our recognition of the sight words. I love for all children to have a chance to guess, share and be heard so I encourage all children to raise their hands and wait to be called on. This way we can have a fun, structured class where everyone can participate by taking turns.

Scavenger Hunts are so much fun, so at the end of each class, we go on a scavenger hunt to find something related to our learning!

Each week is thematic! Below are the monthly themes. If your learner has a favorite animal or theme please let me know and we can incorporate that!

Each week is thematic! Below are the monthly themes.
July - Jungle animals, Zoo animals, Dinosaurs
August - Farm, Bugs, Pond, Ocean

Each day we will practice our writing skills by writing numbers and letters. A dry erase board or paper is needed daily for these activities.

I love to teach and love for learners to participate throughout our class! Everyone will be unmuted for the entire class, unless I hear background noise. Please make sure your child knows how to mute and unmute.

I hope you can join me for this fun and engaging class to prepare your child for Kindergarten!

Hi! I love to teach preschool and early elementary classes and strive for ways to make learning fun and exciting! It is my goal to celebrate all learners and help them to love learning. Teaching phonics, reading, writing and math skills are my absolute favorite!

I graduated from Hiram College in Ohio with a BA in Elementary Education and a Reading Endorsement which means that I did extra course work so I could become a reading specialist if I chose. After college, I taught kindergarten, 1st and 3rd grade for a total of 8 years. During that time, I was honored to be selected as Teacher of the Year for my elementary school and finalist for county wide Teacher of the Year in Nashville, TN. In addition to teaching, I was also a curriculum developer and workshop presenter for 5 years. I created reading, writing, and math curriculum for the county, and then trained elementary teachers K-5 how to teach that curriculum in their classrooms. I also worked for a publishing company developing reading and math units. I stayed home with my children when they were young and then taught a transition to kindergarten class for 6 years.

I love teaching children and believe that learning should be fun and engaging! Children learn best when they are laughing, smiling, singing, drawing, doing hands-on activities, moving, and having fun! For me, there is no greater joy than helping a child grow and learn! I love to play games, sing and make learning fun!

One fun fact about me is that I love animals and have many stuffed animals. My stuffed animals love to join me in my classes. If your learner has a special stuffed animal we would love to have it join us too!
