Kindergarten Phonics With Blend Ladders

***This is the FLEX version of my popular class, "Phonics With Blend Ladders."***

Worlds of excitement and adventure open up for children as they experience the joy of reading! When a student is given a strong foundation of phonics, this joy is entered into eagerly and without reservation. In this phonics class your student will take their knowledge of the alphabet (basic consonant and short vowel sounds) and apply it to forming words using "blend ladders." This is a technique that will help them avoid common frustrations of early readers as they learn to "sound out" words. 

This is a FLEX class, so there are no live meetings. This FLEX class will have a total of 8 - 20min. videos (two per week). In these videos, we will first practice our 5 short vowel sounds. Secondly, we will pair them with a consonant to form a blend: ba-, be-, bi-, bo-, bu-. Finally, we'll add an ending consonant: ba-t/bat, be-t/bet, bi-t/bit, bo-t/bot, bu-t/but. 

FLEX classes are such a great set-up for this because your learner can pause and repeat any section as necessary to gain confidence.

Each blend ladder will have an accompanying printable handout. These printouts are optional, but you may find them useful to help you learner follow along during class, or to review between videos.

Students taking this class will benefit from being familiar with the alphabet and letter sounds. However, mastery is not a prerequisite as we will be practicing the sounds in class as well. 

Here is the breakdown of our class schedule: 
Week 1, Video 1: B and G blends, and CVC words
Week 1, Video 2: L and D blends, and CVC words

Week 2, Video 1: F, Y, and H blends, and CVC words
Week 2, Video 2: J and N blends, and CVC words

Week 3, Video 1: R and S blends, and CVC words
Week 3, Video 2: V, P, and T blends, and CVC words

Week 4, Video 1: W and C/K blends, and CVC words
Week 4, Video 2: M and Z blends, and CVC words

Each week, students will record themselves practicing the blend ladders we learned that week and upload it into the classroom. Students and Ms. Katie will interact with each other as these videos are recorded and shared in the classroom. We are looking forward to encouraging each other with the progress everyone makes!

Each class will feature a scavenger hunt! At the end of the first class, I'll tell you what items to look for. You'll have until the next video is uploaded into the classroom to find the item(s) and take of picture of it and post it in the classroom. Some items you'll be hunting are 1) something that has the short "a" vowel such as a cat, apple, or bat, 2) your favorite toy, 3) sometime that makes you smile or 4) a food item from your pantry. I can't wait to see what you can find!! :-)
