In this six-week course, students will have fun as they improve their listening comprehension through the use of reading comprehension strategies during a weekly interactive read aloud. Developing listening comprehension is the first step in creating a solid foundation for reading comprehension, building vocabulary and increasing one's attention span. During this course, learners will improve their listening comprehension skills as they actively listen to picture books read aloud. As I read, I will model the strategy as well as invite learners to practice the strategy creating an interactive experience. Following each reading, students will work on a comprehension drawing activity, a coloring page or a simple craft related to the story. The comprehension strategies this course will cover are: Week 1 - Wondering (Asking Questions) - Stellaluna by Janell Cannon Week 2 - Picturing (Mental Images) - Fish is Fish by Leo Lioni & Animals should definitely not wear clothing. by Judy Barrett Week 3 - Guessing (Predicting) - Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann Week 4 - Problem/Solution - The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister Week 5 - Making (text-to-self) Connections - Giraffes Can't Dance by Giles Andreae Week 6 - Retell (Sequence) - The Mitten by Jan Brett

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello. I am a certified elementary teacher who currently is a stay-at-home mom for two amazing little girls. We enjoy spending time in nature, arts and crafts, playing games, cooking, gardening in season and reading lots of books. While at home, I also work part-time for an exclusively outdoor forest school program and we are so grateful that we have the opportunity to learn while spending time in nature.
I have a passion for helping young learners discover how they learn best while helping them feel successful. I have worked one-on-one with learners from preschool to college age but I always gravitate to the early years because a solid foundation affects all future academic success. I believe that everyone has the potential to achieve success in all areas of life.
In addition to teaching academics, I have many years of experience in successfully helping learners develop their executive functioning skills, discover their learning styles and become successful learners.
