Class Experience

**Please be aware that Miss Katie lives in a place that observes Daylight Savings Time so class times may change for you starting November 8th, 2021 if your place of residence does not observe DST.**

This class will be set up like a circle time at a school. We will start with a greeting. Then we will move on to a group activity. I sometimes use songs to reinforce learning during my classes. We will then move onto a lesson for that day. Each day of the week will focus on a literacy activity or math activity. I generally focus on

*A typical day in my classroom
-1-2 minutes of greeting
-5 minutes of sight word practice and review (reading the words, spelling them, etc.)
-8-10 minutes of a literacy learning activity - see below for a sample lesson for literacy or math
-8-10 minutes of a math activity - see below for a sample lesson for literacy or math
-2-3 minutes to wrap up the day with a quick game and say goodbye

Literacy
We will be using our knowledge of letters and their sounds to complete activities such as rhyming, blending, segmenting, and reading sight words. Each week the students will be given 2 sight words to practice and memorize. We will learn CVC words and word families such as -at, -en, -ig, op, and -ut.
- Sample lesson - We will learn about the letter pattern of -at. First, we will start by learning how to say each sound in a word slowly and then combine them to say the word. We will do this with a few different words. Then we will match the picture to the word by using a shared screen experience. After that, we will learn to write the sounds that the teacher says on a paper to practice hearing the sound. Then we will practice changing the beginning sound in a word to make a new word.

Math
We will learn about numbers - recognizing 1-20, matching numerals to quantity 1-20, adding simple numbers to 10, and take away from 10. We will also review colors, shapes, patterns, and other Kindergarten math skills.
-Sample Lesson - We will talk about numbers 1-20. First, we will count to 20. Then we will have pictures that have sets of items on the cards. We will count these cards and match them to the number card. The students will practice writing the number. Then I will say a number and the child will write the number they heard. Last we will look at a sequence of numbers and find what is missing.

Each week I will send the students 2 worksheets that will go along with our work that week. There will be one literacy and one math worksheet per week.

**This class begins with the expectation that your child knows most of the letters of the alphabet and their sounds and that they can write their own name.

**I create all of my own worksheets as well as 1 book each week that goes along with our sight words and word family of the week.

I am so excited to be teaching here on Outschool. I have been a teacher for just around 15 years. I taught in brick and mortar schools from 2005 until 2018. I taught everything from Preschool to 3rd Grade and even a year of 6th grade. I can't really tell you my favorite age, because they all have so many pros about them. My passion for teaching comes from my love of helping children succeed. I love to see their eyes light up when they have finally had that light bulb moment with a concept. I love to explore new ways to teach a concept. This is part of the reason I started teaching online part-time in 2017. And now I have been teaching online full-time for just about 2 years. It gives me the flexibility to do what I love and to create my own schedule so that I am available when my family needs me. I have 4 children ranging in age from 3-12. We love playing board games and reading books. My kids have all inherited my love of books! I have a wide variety of interests in teaching subjects. I think my biggest passion is teaching reading to young learners. I can't wait to share my love for learning with your child!
