Class Experience

Itching to sew now that you and your sewing machine are best friends? If you have taken my 6-week beginner KidSew course and are interested in more projects, this class is your next step! During this 4-week course, students will create four more sewing projects that will help them to become even more familiar with the process of sewing a variety of projects. Each of these have been carefully selected by me in order to give you the knowledge you need for more advanced projects.

Here is a list of the items we will make together:
- Crayon, pencil or brush roll with elastic and button closure (excellent for the traveling artist on the go!)
- Fun quilted fish-shaped heating pad/bean bag
- Thread catcher with pin cushion -make a special catch to keep your sewing area near and tidy (bonus: you can use your fishy bean bag as a weight!)
- Easy drawstring backpack

Students should already be familiar with basic sewing and know how to thread, operate and troubleshoot their machine. If you are new to sewing please consider signing up for my introductory class: "KidSew! Beginner to Intermediate Sewing Course".

Sewing skills that will be covered include:
- Reading and following a PDF printable sewing pattern
- Measuring and cutting fabric (basic knowledge of fractions and how to use a ruler is helpful. Measurements are in U.S. Imperial units but can be easily converted with parental assistance)
- An introduction to quilting and piecing
- Encase an elastic strap, sew custom straps and add pockets
- Hand-sewing basics (sewing on buttons and closing turning holes with invisible stitches)
- Detailed explanation of different fabric types and how to choose the right one for your project, including interfacing and stabilizers.

Each project includes a video tutorial and any PDF patterns that you may need to download (note: not all of them require a separate printed pattern). You are welcome to reach out to me for advice, troubleshooting or any questions that you have.

It is my goal for each student to complete my sewing courses with the skills to sew independently. This course is a great way to improve your sewing and learn more techniques that will come in handy as you continue to progress!

Learning Goals

Students will improve their sewing skills by adding some intermediate techniques. Upon completing this class, I recommend moving to my "KidSew Level Up! Advanced Sewing Skills" course.

Parental Guidance
Young students may require help from a parent to access my private video playlists on YouTube, post photos, and measure/cut fabric with scissors. This course uses U.S. measurements (inches and yards), so students preferring the metric system may need assistance converting measurements. However, this is also addressed in the videos and is simple to do.
Supply List
A supply list will be available to download and print upon enrollment.
-Normal basic sewing supplies (notions): straight pins, pincushion, different colored threads, fabric scissors (it is helpful to have a separate pair of sharp scissors to be used for fabric only), needles (for hand sewing), chalk, ruler and measuring tape.
-Cutting surface: a cutting mat and rotary blade is nice to have, but not required. Clear a table with space large enough to set the fabric and pattern pieces on.
-Sewing machine: machine should be a newer model and in good working condition, with needle installed. If you have questions about the machine you have or are looking to purchase one, feel free to message me! You want to avoid the "toy" machines for kids. The normal price range for a basic sewing machine is approx. $100-$150 USD, and some of the popular brands include Brother, Singer and Janome.
-Patterns: these are provided and available for download upon enrollment. When printing them, please make sure the printer settings do not adjust the size of the pattern. Uncheck the "Fit to Page" box and test the 1" square with a ruler after printing.
-Fabric: basic cotton quilting fabric will work for all of our projects. A detailed supply list with measurements is provided immediately upon enrollment.
- Bean bag filler (rice, corn, lentils/beans). Avoid plastic fillers if you'd like the bean bag to double as a heating pad.

I began making my own costumes, room accessories and clothing items as a young girl. As an adult, I started my own successful sewing business, selling my own creations as a professional seamstress both online and locally. I often make custom dance costumes for my dance students, digitize and sew machine embroidery, and I teach basic sewing classes for kids both locally and online through a private virtual homeschooling academy.
