Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
This is class is a flex version of my successful Kids Rock! ongoing club. In this 4-week flex summer camp your learner will have fun with a hands on activity of their choice as an extension of their learning each week. This flex camp allows learners to complete the camp material during a time that is convenient for them each week! If your learner loves rocks, seeks adventure, likes to explore and get creative and wants a flexible weekly schedule this is for them! Your rock hound will be encouraged to see the wonders of the earth in their own backyard and beyond, they can look forward to lessons on:

Week One: The difference between a rock and a mineral and The types of rocks; igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.
Week Two: The rock cycle and How we use rocks and minerals
Week Three: Art with rocks and fossils
Week Four: Erosion and caves

Each week your learner will be presented with online instructions, a choice between two weekly hands on projects, project goals, and a list of recommended materials. Each project is designed to use materials you will have at home and be child led. Participation will include an introduction post, discussion posts, challenge assignments, and a rock hound certificate of completion. The rock hound certificate of completion will be earned after four completed projects are received, your learner will either post their projects to the online classroom or private message the teacher once completed. This allows for regular engagement between the learner and the teacher. Learners can collaborate with their peers by replying to the classroom announcements and lesson postings in the online classroom.

What to expect each week:
>Fun and engaging lesson on rocks each week!
>>Rock show and tell, share stories, adventures, and we will work together to try to classify each unique specimen!
>>>Optional homework in the way of an experiment, craft or adventure.

My goal is that learners will be able to identify different types of rocks, have fun, learn a bit more about geology, and be inspired to marvel in the beauty of rocks all around them!

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a homeschool Mom I am a believer in following learner’s passions and making learning fun. I have seen the ageless sparkle in learner’s eyes when they find an interesting rock and followed this natural curiosity for inspiration in creating this class. I have done the hours and hours of research into geology, petrology, and consulted with my expert rock collector children themselves in creating this class. In short, I dug up all the dirt on rocks and minerals and kept it fun, informative, and relevant keeping learning rich and inspiring. :)
