Description

Class Experience

Do you love rocks? Do you love collecting rocks? Bring your rock collection to class and let’s dig deeper, learning more about this beautiful natural resource! Each class will be full of interesting facts, interactive games and hand-on activities. Learners will be engaged while learning, and have the opportunity to share their favourite rocks from their collection each week.

Your child will learn:
-the differences between a rock and a mineral
-the three categories and distinctions that indicate the different types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic
-the rock cycle
-how we use rocks and minerals
-art with rocks and fossils
-and much more!

We will have fun learning through hands-on experiments and activities. Each child-led activity and experiment is designed to use materials you already have at home and a detailed supply list will be provided in advance. Each class will start with a review and allow new learners to join the club anytime!

Kids Geology club weekly teaching topics will include:
Week of January 3- Difference Between a Rock and a Mineral
Week of January 10 - Types of Rocks; Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic
Week of January 17- Types of Rocks; Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic continued
Week of January 24 - The Rock Cycle
Week of January 31 - How We Use Rock and Minerals
Week of February 7 - Art with rocks
Week of February 14 - Fossils
Week of February 21 - Erosion
Week of February 28 - Caves
Week of March 7 - Fun, Games and New Facts!

My goal is that learners will be excited and look forward to learning about rocks, while marveling at the beauty of rocks all around them!
As a homeschool Mom I am a believer in following learner’s passions and making learning fun. I have seen the ageless sparkle in learner’s eyes when they find an interesting rock and followed this natural curiosity for inspiration in creating this class. I have done the hours and hours of research into geology, petrology and consulted with my expert rock collector children themselves in creating this "Kids Rock Club!" In short, we dug up all the dirt on rocks and minerals and kept it fun, informative, and relevant keeping learning rich and inspiring. :)
Students may want to start their own rock collection.

Optional homework is assigned. Worksheets uploaded to the online classroom to use as a template or to print out to practice our new skills and knowledge.
Materials Required Each Week: Paper and pencil Crayons/Markers If your learner has a rock collection, please bring it to class! Optional Supplies: Magnifying glass Penny Screw There will be other optional science experiments to follow along in class or as homework, each is designed to use materials you will have at home and child led. A detailed supply list will be provided in advance. Here is an idea of the optional supplies: Types of Rocks (week 2) - an edible experiment will be made in class, a supply list will be posted a week in advance for those that want to follow along. This will be made up of common pantry/stocked items. Art with Rocks (week 6) - a clean rock and permanent markers. Fossils (week 7) - play-doh or homemade fossil dough and two small plastic animals (dinosaurs, insects, etc.). The recipe for homemade fossil dough will be provided a week in advance. Erosion (week 8) - 3 chocolate chip cookies, a toothpick, a small cup of water, a plate and a spoon. Caves (week 9) - two cups, baking soda, hot water, a string, a plate and a spoon. Reminders and supply lists are explained in class and posted in the online classroom a week in advance. **Each learner can choose to participate or to follow along and listen and learn, these are all OPTIONAL.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
There will be optional at home science experiments and art projects all are aimed to be student led and with everyday materials. Parent/Adult supervision maybe necessary depending on child.
