Calling all mermaid lovers! In this 3 week class, we will make a different mermaid-themed treat each session while practicing basic kitchen skills. The recipes are low/no prep and easy enough for even the youngest chefs, Class kicks off with Mermaid Toast in week 1. The focus skill is mixing. The chefs will learn to color ingredients with food coloring and develop their fine motor skills by spreading the topping on the toast. (Parental guidance may be required if a knife is used for spreading.) In Week 2, we will make Mermaid Snack Mix. The students will hone their measuring skills with this recipe. Our last class, in Week 3, will be spent making Clamshell Cookies. The students will experiment with cookie design as they assemble and decorate cookies into a clamshell with a pearl. #superstar
Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
New Jersey Teaching Certificate
Bachelor's Degree in English from Rutgers College
Hello! I'm Jessica McKenna. I have a love of learning and enjoy bringing that passion to the classroom. My goal is to inspire your child to be passionate about learning as well.
I have 20 years of teaching experience both in-person and online. My journey teaching on Outschool began in April 2020 and I have been lucky enough to work with learners from all but one continent. In addition to my years teaching on this platform, I have also worked with children ages 3-13 in a variety of in-person capacities, including as a teacher, as a curriculum specialist, and the director of an early education center. I have been the educator of adults as well as children and have had the opportunity to teach other professionals on a wide range of topics including Foundations of Early Education and Positive Guidance in the Classroom.
I have my Bachelor’s Degree in both Art History and English from Rutgers University and am certified to teach Kindergarten through 5th Grade. I am also trained in the Handwriting Without Tears approach to learning print and cursive penmanship and base my handwriting classes and tutoring around this program. Even with the ability to use technology to communicate, I believe that handwriting is an important, basic life skill that should not go unlearned. Cooking is another basic skill that is important, and it offers the opportunity to practice other subjects, most notably math, reading, and science.
My aforementioned love of learning lends itself to my being a life-long learner. I frequently participate in professional development and educational experiences, such as Integrated STEM and Working with Diverse Learners.
When I'm not in the virtual classroom or reading Jane Austen, I enjoy traveling, cooking, and spoiling my cats.
