Class Experience

Get ready to move and groove! In this high-energy interactive dance class, students will learn Old School Hip Hop, new dance trends. We’ll learn dance technique, Hip Hop terminology, and a short dance routine, before jumping into freeze dance. This class offers a balance for kids who aren't ready for a class that is purely "follow the teacher" and offers a great space fore feeling comfortable to dance in a way that each learner chooses to. Please read the class break down carefully.

What to expect:
Class Overview:
- We start with Show and Tell (approximately 5 minutes)
- Short warm-up (follow the teacher, 3-5 minutes)
- Students will learn dance moves, short dance routine (10 minutes, follow the teacher)
- Students will engage in Freeze Dance or Freestyle dance (approximately 10 minutes)
- Students will learn a final group move (basic breakdance, moonwalk, Macarena, or other group move (follow the teacher, 3 minutes)

I offer a friendly environment for students of all abilities and all genders. No dance experience required. This class is designed to support individual self-expression.

*** This class places emphasis on building coordination, improving musicality, and learning dance moves. Our routine is short. Being perfect at the routine is not our goal."

We pack a lot into our 30minute class. Is is:
10% verbal interaction with the teacher and peers
60 % follow the teacher
30% do your own movements

If you feel your child would benefit from a longer "follow the teacher" portion then please check out Hip Hop Dance Jr or Exploring Hip Hop Dance Jr.

If you feel your child only wants to do their own thing then note I only offer that type of class about 2 times a year, one of them is my Halloween party.

This class involves physical movement (all abilities are welcome). It is recommended for your child to have water nearby. Students should refrain from eating during class.

Music Selection:
While this class will not contain music that includes songs with socially identified "bad words" I will be playing Hip Hop Music and Pop music along with some KidzBop. This class aims to provide hip hop dance skills while still honoring hip hop culture. I will not have Elmo or Frozen on the playlist.

I do welcome song suggestions from Kids. I recommend emailing me your kid's song request or posting it on the class page before class (at least 4 hours notice is helpful). This way I can check song lyrics and your kid won't be upset that I didn't play Frozen. I cannot play video game theme songs or theme songs to Pokemon. Kids who don't watch those shows or play those games usually feel lost when those songs are played.

Technology:
If you experience tech issues (wifi drops, device crashes) just email the instructor. I will generally offer to move you to the next available class date.
This class uses a camera and external mic. Sound is shared through zoom to provide the best audio experience. In the event that your child finds the music too loud please turn down the volume on your device.
Feedback from amazing parents is what helps me to know what is and isn't working. It is my goal to provide amazing online educational opportunities for all learners.

Dance style:
Keep in mind this class uses Old School Hip Hop Dance moves and current dance trends. This is not a class designed to teach your child to dance like something they saw on TikTok. While students may be introduced to some basic B-Boy or break dance moves, this is not a break dance class. If your kiddo want to focus on the worm and head spins this class will not provide that.

New to Online Learning?
Children under the age of 7 who are not used to online learning may not be able to focus for the entire class. If your child leaves class early a refund will not be issued. It can take a 6-year-old 2 or 3 classes before they are able to stay engaged the entire class. Engagement is not limited to performing every activity. Engagement can include dancing only to certain songs, watching the monitor and observing other students, jumping/ running while not following the demonstrated dance moves, or singing while not physically moving. Students are encouraged to participate to the best of their ability.
Learning Goals
- Basic hip hop dance moves
- Improved musicality and rhythm
- Develop awareness of "the beat"
- Improved social interaction
-Improved freestyle dance moves

Parental Guidance
Missed class policy: Need to miss a class? New to ongoing classes? - You are welcome to pause your subscription to hold your spot. Keep in mind the spot will be given to someone on the waitlist, but I'll do my best to get you back in class when you unpause. - You are welcome to unsubscribe and return to an ongoing class at anytime (I understand this process isn't easy on Outschool). - Last minute events come up. I am happy to provide a one time missed class courtesy discount for every 90 days. Meaning, I'll hold your spot and you don't have to stop your subscription. I'll just refund the payment (this is usually easiest for everyone). - Once the one time missed class courtesy discount has been used, it would be another 90 days before I would apply that same discount to your account. If your child does miss a class before that 90 day period is up, then your payment goes towards "holding" your child's spot in class. -Class size is small and while things do come up, another kiddo is missing out and the teacher doesn't get paid if we refund for avoidable missed classes. Knowing you'll be out of town is worth pausing. Save that 90 day courtesy for when your little dumpling isn't feeling well. Physical Advisory: This class involves physical movement. Shoes are not required for class and are optional. If your child is dancing on a wooden floor shoes or bare feet may be ideal as children may slip when wearing just socks. If your child is dancing on a carpet, socks may be ideal as sliding will be easier. Ideally the dance space will be at least feet 3-4 feet wide and free of obstruction. Participants have been known to dance in living rooms, bedrooms, and any other space that allows arms to be extended out to the side. By registering for this class it is understood that each family has considered the space the child is moving in and it's appropriateness for a movement based activity. By registering for this class it is understood that the instructor is not responsible for injuries that may result from participation including injuries that may result from children not following directions. Injuries may include, bumps or bruises (example: a kid spins and falls down), fractures/ sprains/ broken limbs (example: a kid chooses not to follow instruction and tries to do a back flip). By registering for this class it is understood that each family has considered the physical health of their child and has taken into consideration any restrictions on movement that a family physician has advised. While most movement is not vigorous enough to upset an individuals asthma, we respect that each individual has different physical abilities. Children are encouraged to stop any movement that causes physical or emotional pain. If you are unsure whether your child will be able to fully participate physically you are welcome to email the instructor prior to registration. The instructor is not a physician and cannot give medical advice.

Through highly interactive student-driven programming we are able to help our students develop leadership and teamwork skills that travel beyond the classroom. All of our classes are gamified and include a touch of silliness. We believe that learning is more fun when we are comfortable enough to laugh and create. We look forward to laughing and learning with you.

Every child is capable of learning and as educators, it is our mission to help each child find their own passion for knowledge.

Our Values:
All of our teachers have a passion for both teaching and learning! We create a safe gender neutral space that celebrates diversity. Our students are welcome to share how they feel in class and they are encouraged to socialize with their peers. Children are very honest and even when they don't mean to, they will let you know exactly how they feel.
