Class Experience

In this one-hour live class, your learner will discover the bravery and fortitude of the young Malala Yousafzai as told in her memoir.
In a casual lecture-style class, the student will engage in an opening introduction activity to ensure each student feels welcomed.
In the introductory section, we will learn the events which led to Malala's commitment, sacrifice, and pursuit to bring education to every child.
The main part of the class will give an overview of Malala's life. We will discuss the difficulties and obstacles that Malala forged through in order to share her dream of an individual's rights to an education. The learner will be able to follow along as Teacher's notes will be shared via google slides. Also, the learner will be presented with additional resources prior to class to ensure that every learning type is met.
Lastly, we will discuss Malala's action plan. Students will identify character traits that directed her to reach her accomplishments and legacy. Students will discuss if they would take the same actions or choose differently. Then they will incorporate what character traits they wish to implement to face and overcome their own struggles.
No prior information is required to understand and engage in this class material.

Parental Guidance
Although the topic of the Taliban and its methods to enforce their laws were gruesome, we will only deal with the information given from the Young Reader version of her memoir: I am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World. There are terms related to the Taliban, including: gun, bullet, flogging/beating, and being followed. These are directly related to Malala's story and related to facts of what happened to her personally. The word Taliban will be identified as a "militant extreme Islamic group." I will clearly make known that most (almost all) Muslims do not condone the events that happened to Malala. I will show pictures of Malala after she has been bandaged up but still looks extremely wounded. If students have other questions regarding other punishment methods or religious beliefs specifically - I will kindly ask them to go to parents/guardians for more information. Also, feel free to ask for further information or if you want to see the photos beforehand. Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching literature and history for over twenty years. I have taught literature and American/British history on an ESL platform in an international university for 6 years. In preparation for teaching internationally, I took several cultural appropriation and counseling classes. I was able to maintain my integrity by keeping facts separated from my opinions. My area of expertise and talent lies in talking about difficult situations and allowing the students freedom and comfort in sharing their opinions. If the student needs further guidance, I will encourage them to discuss it with their guardian/parents.
